Photoshop

  • Its usage within the Production Pipeline of the games industry.
  • Photoshop as a Photo manipulation tool.
  • Photoshop as a Paint package, producing concept art.
  • Working with layering techniques and Photoshop’s layer effects.
  • Creating Tiling textures for game use.
  • Painting custom textures over a 3d objects, Unwrapped Wireframe Template.
  • Developing complex materials using Bump, Normal and Spec maps.
  • Creating Costume Brushes, Masks, Vector paths, Interface buttons and Icons.

Autodesk Maya 3D Modelling Software

  • 3d Modelling of Characters, Weapons, Props, Vehicles and Environments for game development.
  • Texturing and shading. From simple cartoon styles and colours to advanced photo-real bump mapped objects.
  • 3d Animation for characters.
  • Rendering 3d scenes for multiple uses in game production.
  • The uses of Lighting and Camera techniques in 3d worlds.
  • Creating special effects using the toolset within Maya.
  • Creating complex Bump and Spec textures from within Maya.
  • Baking textures from High polygon 3d models onto lower poly game models.
  • Importing and exporting of files from other 3d packages and art programmes.

Z-brush and / or Mudbox

  • Sculpting 3d models using methods that resemble traditional Clay Sculpting.
  • The baking of Textures from the High polygon/ detailed objects to appear on much lower Poly objects in the game environment.
  • Painting textures directly onto 3d models, adding bump detail where necessary.

 

Concept Art

Preliminary Designs and Ideas

  • determining the overall look of the world in which our game takes place using sketches and colour schemes... Creating a feel and a sense of atmosphere.
  • How to translate and communicate ideas in a best way possible.

Concept Design

  • Includes character design, environment design... props, vehicles, etc.
  • Anatomy: bones, muscles... interconnection to one another.

Colour Theory

Use of colour, colour combinations and their visual impact... again from concept art down to an actual game running. Shadow and light... tricks we can use not only in creating atmosphere but also in texturing our characters and their environment. (From Super Mario to Gears of War).

Reference Images

How to use them, when to use them, how to organize them for easy access, etc. 2 categories: inspiration / texturing.

Z-Brush

  • Different approaches to ideas and the smooth transition of these ideas from 2d to 3d.
  • You will be armed not only with experience of actually creating and (in a way) materializing and bringing to life the world of your imagination... But also you will be in possession of knowledge and rules that will make your creative process much easier.
  • You will also be able to read pictures, colours and concepts... spot the mistakes or recognize extraordinary designs, be it your own or someone else's.
  • Even if you (at this point) feel that your strength is not necessarily in art and design what you will learn will benefit you greatly... down the line ultimately you will work as a part of the team and communication will be that much easier if:
    • You understand the rules and use of visual language in videogames.
    • Have knowledge of programs like Photoshop and Z-brush and their use in creation of videogame.
    • Preliminary stages and concept design in video games.

 

This course is developed around the IGDA curriculum framework.
